Sourpi Magnesia – Traditional village in Thessaly, Greece

Located just 16 km from Almyros and 51 km from Volos. With a population of about 2,500 residents (2021), it stands as one of the largest and most vibrant villages in the Almyros region. The village is mainly inhabited by Aromanians (Vlachs), whose customs and community spirit are deeply woven into its identity.

The people of Sourpi are known for their connection to the land — most families are engaged in the cultivation of olive trees, tomato farming, and local produce processing, which fill the area with the scents and colors of rural life in Thessaly.

⛪ Landmarks and Traditions

At the entrance of the village stands the impressive stone church of Agios Georgios, built in 1892, a symbol of local faith and heritage. In the heart of the village, the cobblestoned square surrounds the church of Agia Paraskevi, dedicated to the beloved saint and protector of the community. Every year, on July 25th, Sourpi hosts a two-day festival in her honor, filled with music, dance, and traditional food that bring villagers and visitors together in celebration.

During the first week of August, the village comes alive with cultural events, including theatre performances, folk music nights, and art exhibitions, keeping local traditions vibrant and alive. One of the most anticipated events is the annual Carnival celebration, held on the last Sunday before Lent (end of March), where the square turns into a joyful stage of colors, costumes, and laughter — a true expression of Thessalian festivity.

🍖 Flavors and Hospitality

Sourpi is also well-known for its barbecue tavernas, where guests can enjoy authentic grilled meats, handmade pies, and local wine in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Every meal here reflects the warmth and generosity of the villagers.
