Milies Pelion Greece

Milies village Pelion: One of the most picturesque and traditional big villages of Pelion, Milies is built in an amphitheatrically style, on the green mountain slopes of Mount Dikri. The village is called Millies (apple trees) known for the production of apple trees. Full of old mansions, marble fountains and olive trees, Milies offers the perfect harmony. Milies is the place with the beautiful famous cave where the mythic Centaur Chiron and his students used to live.

Milies is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Pelion, but that might not mean much, given that we’re talking about an area filled with natural beauty. So, perhaps the greatest compliment for Milies is what many visitors say: that, in its own way, it’s a perfect example of the essence of the Centaurs’ mountain.

Milies is built at 400 m altitude and is 28 km away from Volos. According to the 2011 census, the population is 640 permanent residents. Tradition has it that Milies was founded by migrants from Milies in Evia – a village that might still exist, but in the past was the victim of pirate attacks that at times resulted in its abandonment. This has not been verified by historic research, but the oldest mention of the village in writing (1510) does in fact belong to a period filled with pirate troubles.

Really interesting to see are the Library of Milies which contains four thousand rare books, the Folklore Museum of the community and the three-aisled basilica of Pamegistoi Taxiarches.

You must visit the rail station. It is here that the steam train “Moutzouris-Smudgy” reaches its destination. The Italian engineer Jiorgio de Kirico developed this project in 1895, and created one of the most beautiful and difficult rail lines, with the help of local workmen.

During the summer, many festivals take place, such as “Milies Night” in the middle of August and the “Pear Night” at the end of August. A large festival also takes place on the name day of Agia Paraskevi on July 25th to 27th, with traditional music and dance.
