Keramidi Pelion Greece
Keramidi is a small traditional village located on the northern slopes of Pelion Mountain, about 45 km north of Volos. Keramidi distinguishes for its traditional architecture with the stone houses, the paved paths and the central square. In this square, there are huge plane trees with traditional coffee houses and taverns underneath. From the yard of the church of Agios Georgios in Keramidi, you can have an incredible view to the Aegean Sea.
In the main square of the village is the church of Agios Georgios, which was built in 1747. On April 23rd is his name day and a big celebration takes place, where traditional wheat rice (Pligour) is served.
A little further out from the village are the ruins of a Venetian castle. The villagers here are occupied with olive trees and stockbreeding.
If you would like to swim, you can go to the glorious beach of Kamari, which is just 4km away. There is the seaside village of Kamari, with a small port where fishing boats moor. Here you will find seafood tavernas serving fresh fish.
It is believed that close to these coasts, part of the Persian king Xerxes was destroyed in 480 BC, close to the ancient town of Kasthanea.
The village’s history is around 3 centuries old, while some historians believe it is greater. Founders were people from nearby villages, runaways and other farmers who under the pressure of the Ottomans decided to come to this remote place to be secure, since the dense forest provided perfect cover. Its name Keramidi (roof tile) derives from the tiles on the roofs of the first houses.
During the celebration of Agios Georgios on the 23rd of April a fair is organized in the village with traditional music, dances and lot of pligouri (a mixture of various meats with wheat) being offered to visitors, prepared at the church’s exterior. Apart from Agios Georgios fair, other fairs take place in the village such as the 3day fair for celebrating the 9days after The Assumption of Virgin Mary on the 23-25 of August and various other celebrations in chapels around the village.
