Afetes Pelion – The Mythical “Departure Point” of the Argonauts
Afetes, also known by its older names Afetai or Niaou, is one of the most scenic and historically rich villages in South Pelion. Located just 27 km from Volos, the village spreads gracefully along a green hillside covered with olive groves, offering stunning panoramic views of the Pagasitic Gulf. Its stone houses and cobbled alleys descend toward a beautiful pebbled shore, where nature and myth meet in harmony.
🏡 Origins and History
The first settlers of Afetes were shepherds from Macedonia who arrived around 1550, living in sheepfolds on the slopes of the hill. From this lifestyle came the name “Niaou”, meaning sheepfold.
Between 1881 and 1912, Niaou formed part of the Municipality of Afetai together with the nearby villages Neochori and Afissos.
In 1955, the village was renamed Afetai, inspired by the ancient Greek word “afetiria” (ἀφετηρία), meaning departure point. According to Greek mythology, it was from the beach of Ampovos, just below the village, that Jason and the Argonauts set sail on their second voyage in search of the Golden Fleece.
The name Afetes also links back to Aphetae, the ancient port mentioned by Herodotus, where the Persian fleet anchored before the Battle of Artemisium in 480 BC.
Today, Afetes is part of the modern Municipality of Afetai, established under the Kapodistrias plan of administrative reform, and continues to preserve its strong historical and cultural identity.
