Afetes<\/strong>, also known by its older names Afetai<\/strong> or Niaou<\/strong>, is one of the most scenic and historically rich villages in South Pelion<\/strong>. Located just 27 km from Volos<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, the village spreads gracefully along a green hillside covered with olive groves<\/strong>, offering stunning panoramic views of the Pagasitic Gulf<\/strong>. Its stone houses and cobbled alleys<\/strong> descend toward a beautiful pebbled shore<\/strong>, where nature and myth meet in harmony.<\/p>\n

\ud83c\udfe1 Origins and History<\/h3>\n

The first settlers of Afetes were shepherds from Macedonia<\/strong> who arrived around 1550<\/strong>, living in sheepfolds on the slopes of the hill. From this lifestyle came the name \u201cNiaou\u201d<\/strong>, meaning sheepfold<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Between 1881 and 1912<\/strong>, Niaou formed part of the Municipality of Afetai<\/strong> together with the nearby villages Neochori<\/strong> and Afissos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In 1955<\/strong>, the village was renamed Afetai<\/strong>, inspired by the ancient Greek word \u201cafetiria\u201d<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c6\u03b5\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03af\u03b1), meaning departure point<\/em>. According to Greek mythology<\/strong>, it was from the beach of Ampovos<\/strong>, just below the village, that Jason and the Argonauts<\/strong> set sail on their second voyage in search of the Golden Fleece<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The name Afetes<\/strong> also links back to Aphetae<\/strong>, the ancient port<\/strong> mentioned by Herodotus<\/strong>, where the Persian fleet anchored before the Battle of Artemisium<\/strong> in 480 BC<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Today, Afetes is part of the modern Municipality of Afetai<\/strong>, established under the Kapodistrias plan<\/strong> of administrative reform, and continues to preserve its strong historical and cultural identity.<\/p>\n
