A History Beyond its Name

Although the name “Kissos” refers to the plant, the historian G. Kordatos suggests it might derive from a corruption of the word “chrysos” (gold) (locals still call it “K’so”), due to an old ore mine in the area. The village, originally located closer to the sea, was moved to a higher altitude for safety from pirate raids.

The rich history of Kissos is also captured in its central square, which features a bust of Rigas Feraios. This is no coincidence: a renowned Greek school operated in Kissos as early as 1753, where it is believed Rigas himself taught.

The Jewel of the Square: The Basilica of Agia Marina

In the shade of the huge plane trees in the square lies the village’s diamond: the Church of Agia Marina. Built in 1650, this three-aisled basilica is the most famous in all of Pelion.

Upon entering, the gaze is drawn to the masterpiece wood-carved iconostasis made of linden wood. It is said to have taken 60 years for Epirote artisans to complete, and it was gilded in 1793. Equally impressive are the frescoes covering every surface, works of the folk painter Ioannis Pagonis (1802), especially on the four domes of the ceiling.

Activities for All Seasons: From Waterfalls to Skiing

Kissos isn’t just for relaxation; it’s also for action.

• Hiking: It serves as a major hiking hub. The most famous trail leads to the Tympanos Waterfalls, a hidden oasis where water cascades forcefully (the route involves walking through an old water channel). Other paths lead to the historic Monastery of Agios Efstathios and the neighboring village of Hania.
• Winter: Kissos is an ideal base for skiers, as it is just 12 km from the Agriolefkes Ski Center in Hania.
• Summer: Just 8-10 km away are the famous beaches of Eastern Pelion. Swim at the sandy beaches of Agios Ioannis and Papa Nero, or the cinematic Damouhari with its white pebbles.
• Culture: Experience local tradition at the large festivals (panigiria) of Agia Marina (July 17th) and Agios Efstathios (September 2nd), featuring live music and dancing.
